Run up to success: Madhuri Dixit
Madhuri Dixit, who ruled the Bollywood box-office for over a decade, is back. Being a pucca Mumbaikar, of course, she starts her day when most of the city is fast asleep.

"Happy new year," said Madhuri when we met at Holiday Inn in Juhu. It was five in the morning and the entire city was fast asleep after partying all night. Then she looked disapprovingly at her secretary Rikku Rakeshnath, who looked sleepy. "Hey, stop yawning, it's such a beautiful morning," she said.

When Madhuri is in town, Rikku seems to be the busiest manager in Bollywood. "He gets more phone calls than I do," laughed Madhuri. The actress prefers to divert all her calls through Rikku. "He filters the call, and that works fine with me," she explained.

Madhuri looked fresh in her yoga outfit and we began walking down Juhu beach. "It looks so nice and clean now," she remarked happily.

Nothing like nariyal pani to cool down
Madhuri's New Year resolution is to look fit and get ready for her comeback venture with producer Yash Chopra. "I remember, when we were kids, our teacher would take us out Nothing like nariyal pani to cool down on picnics to Juhu beach. I love the pani-puri and masala pao here. But later on it became so commercial and dirty that you did not even feel like coming here," she grumbled.

When informed that MP and actress Hema Malini had taken the initiative in cleaning up the beach, Madhuri said, "I think Hemaji has done a fantastic job. I must call her right now and thank her for doing this for the people in Mumbai. Now at least I can walk bare feet in Juhu and not feel that my feet will get dirty." As if to prove her words, she slipped off her shoes and walked barefoot on the beach. "It feels so nice, na?" she asked eagerly.

Madhuri looks fabulous today and claim that the secret of her beauty is her husband. "Ram is a fantastic husband. Being a doctor, he suggests diet options for me and insists on my having a balanced diet. It's a misnomer that one should cut down carbohydrates and fats. Everything is important for one's health. Ram believes in eating healthy food, and sees to it that I never fast or starve," said Madhuri, while jogging along the beach.

Suddenly a man passing by stopped and asked her, "Are you Madhuri Dixit? So you are back from the US?" Madhuri nodded with a smile and continued jogging. "I am a morning person, and I like to jog around this time because there are very few people around. It's not that I don't like to interact with my fans, but it takes away my time," she said. "However, now very often people wonder whether they are actually seeing Madhuri or just a look-alike!"

Tired after her jog, Madhuri sat down on the sand and began her yoga session. "The idea of working out for me is a balanced act. I don't think that by only working in a gym you can get a good body. You need to have a good mind to get a good body, and outdoors is the best place to work out in. Yoga gives me stamina. Trust me, it's difficult to look beautiful after delivering two babies," she laughs.

Does she aspire for an athletic body like Esha Deol or Koena Mitra? "I would not like to comment on any of these actresses. I would simply like to look the way I used to, earlier, before I left. I know my body, and I also know that certain things don't suit me. People like me the way I am," she replied. Next, Madhuri drank a lot of water and then moved towards the gymnasium. "In our times, when we started our careers, we were raw. Nowadays actresses are well-groomed and perfect right at the outset. We took time to become what we are today, but now I think industry has become ruthless. Either you are perfect or you are out," she shrugged.

After working out in the gymnasium for 15 minutes, she looked at Rikku and said, "Are you hungry?" And we all headed for a lavish buffet breakfast. "Never skip your first meal," she warned. "I have started talking like a doctor now. I know that most of the time in the day I am busy with my kids and now that I am getting back to films, I need plenty of energy. And good food provides that.”

True to her word, Madhuri had a fruit juice, some egg white, salads and a chicken sandwich. "I have six meals a day and that works wonders for me. Post-motherhood women tend to put on weight, which I too did. But thanks to my work-out regime and Ram's advice, I am back in shape now," she said.

Madhuri will start shooting from January 15.  Naturally, she is very excited. "I have realised that I belong to this place and this industry and I will always work her. However, family will be my priority, so I will only work in two films every year," she said. She was interrupted by a call from home. "Bache log jag gaye hai kya.. accha main abhi aayee," she said into her phone. And excused herself immediately.
