Madhuri Mania

She has the most dazzling smile which lights up the room instantly. Karan Johar  felt the megawatt smile in his show Koffee With Karan.

Dubai: M.F. Husain, a self-confessed fan of actor Madhuri Dixit, has booked an entire show of her comeback film Aaja Nachle, which is releasing in theatres in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday. The film will be released in India on Friday.

Bollywood's master choreographer isn’t known to be particularly sugary and kind to stars, forget probing journalists. So I try to be as well mannered as possible when I meet Saroj Khan at Mumbai’s Riverdale Studios where she is shooting for her forthcoming television show Nachle Ve With Saroj Khan where she shares her dancing skills with viewers. “I don’t have to tolerate star tantrums - that’s one good thing about a show like this,” says Khan, offering us a taste of her candour.

How would you describe Namrata Shirodkar as a co-star?
I know Namrata because of Shilpa (her sister). We have worked together and I know Namrata through her. She is a very nice girl, easy to work with. She has done a good job in the film. Of course, the credit goes to Rajkumar Santoshi totally. All the performances in this film are very good. I mean, I can be proud of this film, you know... I can show it to my children as one of the films that I have done (laughs).

Is this a slap on the faces of all those who say married actresses cannot succeed?
I wouldn’t say it’s a slap, I mean, we are not at war. I would just say that times have changed and people should realise that. We have married women working everywhere, so why not in films?

There is something about Madhuri Dixit Nene. A girl who came from a middle class Maharashtrian background, she would have probably ended up a microbiologist had the Rajshris not discovered her. Abodh was just a teaser into the Madhuri mania that went on to envelope the nation. She fired the screen with her acting abilities and her excellent dancing skills.

Childhood: Middle-class values & the Marathi mulgi

Picture
Madhuri with her husband, Dr Nene
I grew up in a middle-class family and just the other day I was telling my son how we had just a few toys when we were growing up, as we could not afford too many toys. But we still had a good life because we had so many kids to play with. The apartment complex that I lived in had 22 kids in my age group and everyday we used to come back from school, do our homework and just run down to play. That is all we knew and that’s what kids here miss. They miss the company of other kids as everybody is working and by the time the parents pick up their kids from the daycare, the day is over. So even though we had a middle-class upbringing and didn’t have much, we still had a lot of fun. We enjoyed every moment of our lives and there was so much silliness and running around that we did.

A LIFE In Beauty

Superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have on record been vying to work with her. Star actresses Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and Vidya Balan can be heard singing her praises from myriad platforms.

Rani Mukherjee even fell prostrate at her feet on a reality show in full public view to prove that she is her “biggest self-declared fan.” She is the wish list for many directors – veteran and debuting. Trade pundits celebrate her as the industry’s last diva heroine, who enjoyed an undisputed reign at the top through the 1990s concluding an illustrious line of Bollywood’s most successful box-office queens and Numero Uno actresses Sridevi (80s), Hema Malini (70s), Vyjayanthimala Bali (60s) and Nargis (50s).
